Weight Loss - Is Being Overweight Good Or Bad?

Everybody should know what being overweight is, even the people that don't mind having a few extra pounds. And it is well worth knowing the reasons to lose weight. The goal of this article is to enumerate these reasons.

Let's do a little math. Divide your weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters and you get your Body Mass Index (BMI)! If the BMI is equal to or greater than 25 kg/m2, then you are overweight (both men and women).

So, let's say you are overweight. Then you are at risk of a number of diseases. The first grade risk is the heart disease, which can lead to a heart attack. In many cases heart attacks are deadly. Heart disease develops when the heart has to work extra hard to pump the blood through the body, which causes its fatigue. This can occur simply because the person is overweight, or can be the result of high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Together with the heart disease, the high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels also raise the risk for a stroke. Strokes occur when the blood, and therefore oxygen, cannot reach the brain. This can happen due to high cholesterol. When you have high cholesterol, the fatty deposits build up on your artery walls. If a piece of this plaque breaks off and travels to the heart, it causes a heart attack, and when it travels to the brain, it causes a stroke.

Being overweight is also bad for women who wish to become pregnant. When the person is overweight, the hormones in her body are changing, and if she does not receive the right nutrients, her body does not produce the right chemicals for the hormones needed to ovulate or carry a child. Even if she becomes pregnant, being overweight puts her at risk of a miscarriage or health problems of the baby.

Being overweight can also affect your daily life in a number of ways. It can be:

• Difficult to purchase clothing in your size.

• The clothing in larger sizes is more expensive.

• When visiting theme parks, one may not be able to ride all the rides.

• When using public transportation, one may feel crowded in seats made for smaller people.

So there are serious reasons why losing weight is a healthy and smart action, even if you are currently happy with your weight.
